Introduction
Welcome! This training module will introduce you to version 6.0
of AppleShare IP, an integrated server solution that provides
file, Web, FTP, SMB, mail and print services for Apple Power Macintosh
and Power-PC-based Workgroup Servers. In addition to providing
a general product overview, these pages will assist technical
support professionals to quickly learn about ASIP features, and
to configure and support AppleShare IP services.
UPDATE: These materials were updated to include information on AppleShare
IP 6.1 and Appleshare IP 6.2. After completing the information
about version 6.0, follow the link in the sidebar below to learn
about new features in AppleShare IP v6.1 and v6.2.
NOTE: This module looks best when viewed with Netscape, with a

- Compiled Related Topics
Many of the sections above contain a subsection called "Related Topics" containing links to articles describing special situations or
providing a more detailed explanation of certain ASIP technologies
or features. Not everyone will be interested in, or will require,
the information provided in Related Topics, so the information
in not integrated into the training. You can also access all the
Related Topics articles from the "Links" Page. Navigation
There are 3 different courses to follow through this module.
General
For general information about ASIP, its features, requirements,
licensing & cost, follow the blue arrows.
Basic
In addition to the general product information, the Basic technical
portion covers information needed to be a client of, or support
clients of, ASIP services. Follow the green arrows for the Basic
course.
Advanced
The purple path is designed for server administrators, or people
who support ASIP server administrators. It includes everything
covered in general and basic sections, and adds details on server
administration and how things work in order to troubleshoot problems
that may arise integrating network-based services into an organization.
Use the purple arrows to follow the advanced course.
The navigation menu at the left will bring you to first page of
the subsections; several branch off to cover the individual services
provided in the ASIP package.
While going through the training using the appropriate arrows
is probably the easiest way to get all the information in a methodical
way, the site map will be useful to those who prefer to hop around.
From the Site Map, you can see each page, whether its "General," "Basic," or "Advanced" information, and whether or not you've
visited. Click the compass icon to see the Site Map.
Prerequisites
No prior knowledge of AppleShare IP is required, but the Advanced sections which deal with installation, use, and support do assume
the following knowledge and skills:
- a solid foundation in the Mac OS,
- experience in file sharing (either personal file sharing or previous
versions of AppleShare Server software), concepts of users and
groups and access privileges.
- a basic knowledge of AppleTalk and TCP/IP networking, and
- some experience, even if from a client standpoint, of various
TCP/IP services, such as FTP (file transfer protocol), HTTP (i.e.,
Web services), and SMTP (e-mail).
Much of the same information presented here can also be found
in a more detailed, step-by-step format in the ASIP Getting Started Guide, and accompanying html help files.
